LOOKING-GLASS: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS & DISTRIBUTORS WANTED
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:
LOOKING-GLASS is a new HyperCard-based electronic journal
for Macintosh that will incorporate text, graphics, QuickTime movies,
animation, and sounds.
LOOKING-GLASS will be designed using the Voyager Expanded Books(tm)
Toolkit. This is the same software that The Voyager Company currently
uses to publish its own electronic books, such as The Annotated Alice,
and William Gibson's Neuromancer.
Current plans are for a quarterly. We are now taking submissions
for the first issue, date of publication to be announced.
Here is a description of what Looking-Glass is looking for:
FICTION: Short stories. Partial to speculative fiction and
contemporary fantasy (Jonathan Carroll type). Science fiction okay.
No swords and sorcerers, mysteries.
POETRY: New experimental poetry. We encourage new and
provocative works. We can print poetry over graphics.
NONFICTION: Articles on artists, writers, playwrights, musicians,
technology involving music, art, film, etc. but not full of technobabble.
Articles on society and/or technology.
-NO- news articles about hardware ("Apple Unveils Power PC"),
concert reviews, or music reviews.
ESSAYS: Critiques of culture/society/media/technology.
Where are we headed and why should we go there?
GRAPHICS: Experimental images for the 21st century.
We encourage the creation of a new design aesthetic.
PHOTOGRAPHY: Send images on floppy-disk.
Photographs can now be put on CD ROM from Kodak.
From there, you can copy the photo to a file.
Photo CDs accepted, but WE CAN ONLY RETURN YOUR CD
IF YOU ENCLOSE A STAMPED, SELF-ADDRESSED MAILER (Overseas, send IRC.)
ANIMATION AND VIDEO: QuickTime format.
ANNOTATIONS: Any word could be clicked on to open an annotation.
Want to read more about something? You have a built in sidebar.
Similarly, a written piece could be done interactively and non-linearly,
with annotations that take you to a different page.
Each time you read the piece, it would be different.
Send clear details of what should be linked together and how.
ELECTRONIC SUBMISSIONS ONLY (e-mail or disk).
The only exception to this rule is poetry, which may be submitted
on paper by regular mail. MS Word preferred, but send whatever format
you have, and we'll try to open it. NO DISKS WILL BE RETURNED.
WHEN SUBMITTING GRAPHICS:
LOOKING-GLASS is going to be sized for 9" monitors.
Please keep this size limitation in mind.
The first issue will be uploaded to a series of Macintosh-based
bulletin boards throughout the world, as well as CompuServe, AOL,
and an Internet site. Because of this, the file size will have to be
kept relatively small and wont have much in the way of movies or sounds.
You can also order the first issue for free by sending a floppy disk
and a SASE (or IRC).
All issues following the first issue will be released in two formats.
The first format will be the BBS (demo) edition, which will be available
on BBSs. This edition will be an edited version. In order to receive the
entire journal, you will need to subscribe. Subscription information
will be included in all BBS editions.
Subscribers will receive LOOKING-GLASS on disk via regular mail.
PAYMENT FOR CONTRIBUTORS:
LOOKING-GLASS can not currently pay contributors.
Your work will be going out to major US cities, Canada,
Europe, Australia, and Japan. When LOOKING-GLASS starts
to turn a profit, payment rates will be established for contributors.
DISTRIBUTORS WANTED:
In order for LOOKING-GLASS to achieve true world-wide
distribution, we need your help. You can become a Distributor
by agreeing to receive the BBS edition by mail and uploading it
to 3-5 Mac BBSs in your area. Some of you may not have that many
BBSs in your area don't worry, we're flexible.
Distributors receive FREE SUBSCRIPTIONS to the full disk edition
of LOOKING-GLASS.
To submit, or apply to become a Distributor,
send the following information:
YOUR NAME
YOUR ADDRESS
E-MAIL ADDRESS (if any)
YOUR PHONE NUMBER (OPTIONAL)
Distributors only: LIST THE NAMES, LOCATIONS,
AND PHONE NUMBERS OF THE BBSs THAT YOU WILL UPLOAD TO.
Here are the addresses for submissions,

Facilitator Note:
I will be sending the first issue out on...
- Pegasus Networks - Global APC Networks
- Macintouch = First Class (actually reaches 6 other sites too)
- System-X = Ezycom FidoNet
- MacConnection = Telefinder
- FoX BBS = Fidonet
So, if you are interested in being a distributor,
please do not duplicate that list and there will be no need to
send it to any other Mac BBS using FirstClass as they all share files.
Sounds like a worthwhile project to me, imho!
